Thieves in our Midst

Last week we began a series “Scripture’s Solutions for Stress, Fatigue and Burnout.” We looked at the 4th commandment: honouring the sabbath. Thinking of the 10 commandments led me to think about the 10th commandment and what it would mean for us today.

You shall not covet your neighbour’s house. You shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour. Exodus 20:17

Wise words, as relevant today as the day they were given! Today we might put it in these words:

 Don’t look at Facebook and think someone else’s life is better than yours.

 Don’t wish for someone else’s house.

 Don’t look at your neighbour’s car and think, “I wish I had that car!”

 Don’t envy your neighbour’s wealth that allows them to travel more than you can.

 Don’t look at other’s spouses or families and think, I wish they were mine…

 Don’t look with envy at anything others have or who they are…

And the list goes on… What comparison does the enemy whisper in your ear, that steals your joy? As has been said:

Comparison is the thief of joy.

At our recent Fatherheart "A" school it was put this way, "If we could see ourselves as God sees us, we would never want to be anyone else.” And Paul put it this way:

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. Phil. 4:12-13
